Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist

Occupational Summary:

A CT scan technologist must be able to accurately interpret a physician’s scanning
instructions, administer contrast materials, prepare, and operate the CT scan equipment,
and position the patient to capture the appropriate images.

Reports To: Director of Imaging

Supervises: None

Qualifications:

1. Associate degree in Radiology.
2. Current BLS Certification.
3. ARRT certification in CT or CT registry eligible.
4. 1 year’s previous experience as a CT technician.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

1. Prepare patients for CT procedures by positioning patients, adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into specific positions, and adjusting equipment controls.
2. Obtain and examine orders to include the patient’s name, date of birth, requested procedure, clinical information (reason for the exam), requesting physician’s signature, date and time of order, and any other special notes or comments.
3. Administer oral contrast agents to adult and pediatric patients according to protocols, establishes intravenous lines, administers IV contrast following safe and proper injection procedures, follows correct procedure to determine contrast
   eligibility, checks appropriate lab values before contrast injection per protocol.
4. Utilizes all radiographic equipment to perform x-rays including but not limited to surgical and portable equipment and operates CT scanner proficiently and competently.
5. Perform medical imaging exams and interpret images to diagnose medical conditions as directed by Radiologists.
6. Perform routine diagnostic procedures according to established standards and practices under the direction of the Radiology Manager and Radiologists.
7. Follow radiation protection regulations in accordance with standards established by the state and federal boards.
8. Review Radiation Protection Plan Policy annually with documentation of signature and date. Document all fluoroscopy times in EMR and PACS. Documents radiation dosage for CT procedures.
9. Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
10. Practice patient safety by performing hand washing or using hand sanitizer before beginning procedures and wearing appropriate PPE.
11. Assist in quality control of the equipment by contacting the appropriate personnel and notifying the department supervisor as necessary.
12. Maintain production and quality of CT images by following established standards and procedures.
13. Educate patients and thoroughly explain the procedure to be performed to facilitate cooperation and alleviate patient anxiety, including addressing the patient’s concern about radiation exposure.
14. Other duties as assigned.
