May 6, 2018 – Happy National Nurses week 2018! Each year, National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6th to May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. We take this week to celebrate nurses for the work they do and for the great role they play in our lives.
The first National Nurses week was honored in 1954 when President Ronald Reagan recognized Florence Nightingale for her bravery in the Crimean War 100 years prior. In 1854, Nightingale organized and lead a team of three dozen nurses to Crimea to tend to the ill and wounded soldiers. During this time, she was known as the “Lady with the Lamp” because she would continuously make her rounds during the night ensuring that her patients were stable. Her amazing care and compassion is estimated to have reduced the hospital’s death rate by two-thirds.
