Respiratory Care Therapists (RT)

Occupational Summary:

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing direct patient care in accordance with established plans.

Reports To: Respiratory Team Leader or Physician

Supervises: This is a non-supervisory position

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of an associate degree from a credited Respiratory Therapist Program
  2. Valid license as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of practice.
  3. Minimum BLS/CPR certification
  4. Minimum of one year’s clinical experience
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Assess patient’s respiratory status and administers prescribed respiratory therapy procedures as ordered by physician.
  2. Evaluates patient’s response to respiratory treatments and follows proper protocol to inform physician and nurse in the event of an adverse reaction.
  3. Monitors performance of respiratory related equipment.
  4. Charts and records therapy and any changes in physician’s orders in patient chart.
  5. Assists physician in management of mechanical ventilation.
  6. Demonstrates and promotes appropriate communication with other hospital medical staff.
  7. Review patient charts for appropriate data pertinent to respiratory status and informs physicians of any complications or hazards relevant to the prescribed regime.
  8. Adjusts mechanical ventilators according to physician’s guidelines to maintain acceptable blood gas parameters.
  9. Performs specific diagnostic tests relevant to respiratory care, especially arterial blood gasses and spirometry.
  10. Demonstrates consideration and professionalism in working with patient’s family members.
  11. Set up, inspect, test and operate mechanical ventilators, oxygen apparatuses, and nebulizer treatments.
